Do Reading Glasses Make Your Eyes Weaker?

There is a common myth circulated about reading glasses and how they make your eyes weaker.  You may have even heard this one yourself.  This is simply not true; there is simply no evidence to support that claim.

The reason this misconception about reading glasses is so widely accepted is simple.  Let's assume you had difficulties reading the fine print in books or newspapers, so you decide to purchase some reading glasses.  Now you can read your newspaper without any difficulties.  But now let's fast forward a year or two later from this point.  You now notice that you need stronger reading glasses in order to read clearly.  What happened?

Many people claim the reason you now need stronger reading glasses is because the original glasses weakened your eyes, thereby increasing your dependance on them.  This just isn't true.  What has happened is that your eyes have aged more and have become more mature.  As some of us age, our eyes may become less able to focus.  Your dependance on reading aids are not increased by using reading glasses.  Reading glasses help correct vision problems many of us face as we grow older.
